How Does Stress Affect the Health of Your Teeth?

More than 70% of dentists that were surveyed by the ADA Health Policy Institute are seeing a steady increase of patients experiencing teeth grinding and clenching, conditions often related to stress. This is a marked increase from the 60% seen last fall.

“Our polling has served as a barometer for pandemic stress affecting patients and communities seen through the eyes of dentists,” said Marko Vujicic, PhD, chief economist and vice chairman of the ADA Health Policy Institute. “The increase over time suggests stress-related conditions became substantially more prevalent since the onset of COVID-19.”

The survey also found that just over 60% of dentists saw a rise in other stress-related dental conditions including chipped and cracked teeth and temporomandibular joint disorder symptoms like headaches and jaw pain.

“As the pandemic continues, dentists are seeing stress-related dental conditions ore and more,” said ADA chief science officer Marcelo Araujo, DDS, MS, PhD. “It’s more important than ever for people to maintain their dental health, including seeing the dentist regularly to deal with any issues that would have long-term impact.”

Recent news reports have surfaced suggesting that frequent mask-wearing could impact dental health and result in “mask mouth,” the ADA said, the survey found no substantive change within the prevalence cited for conditions like bad breath and xerostomia compared to before the pandemic.

There are many reasons why you would possibly grind or clench your teeth. However, 70% of individuals report stress and anxiety as primary triggers. When used in excess, many stimulants like alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine can worsen the severity of your condition. Those with obstructive apnea are known to possess an increased risk and incidence for grinding and clenching their teeth.

Meet Judd Chamberlain, DDS

My small town upbringing translates into how the office treats you as a patient. I have a conservative approach to dentistry and a deep respect for your control over your dental choices. What sets me apart from most general dentists is that I completed a voluntary extra year of clinical training in dental specialties after dental school. In addition, for five years, I directed a post-graduate dental educational program through the Marillac Clinic. This means that our practice offers many specialty treatments in-house, such as root canals, implants, and extractions. It also means I have a deep understanding and appreciation for the latest technology, methods, and dental materials.
